Nightmare Alley: a disturbing new trailer for the new Guillermo del Toro

Guillermo del Toro is back with “Nightmare Alley” carried notably by Bradley Cooper, Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett. The film is revealed with a new trailer.

Nightmare Alley, Del Toro’s new nightmare

After being Oscar winner for The Shape of Water, Guillermo del Toro decided to tackle Nightmare Alley, an adaptation of William Lindsay Gresham’s noir novel titled The Charlatan (1946). The director once again offered himself an impressive cast with Bradley Cooper, Toni Collette, Rooney Mara, Cate Blanchett and Willem Dafoe, not to mention Richard Jenkins and Ron Perlman whom he had previously directed. A distribution that shows itself more with a new trailer which allows to give more details on the plot.

The story follows Bradley Cooper asa fairground, Stanton Carlisle, who claims to be a medium. We see him claiming to communicate with spirits. A subterfuge he would have to put in place with the help of a psychiatrist, Lilith Ritter. The latter goes turn out to be more Machiavellian than he imagined.

At the limit of the fantastic

Guillermo del Toro had announced that his feature film would be the first to not to be a fantasy movie. No creatures this time, but monsters real ones represented by human beings. Which is nothing new for the Mexican director. Whether with The Devil’s Backbone, Pan’s Labyrinth or even The Shape of Water, it is the man who is generally the most dangerous and malicious. The atmosphere of Nightmare Alley also evokes Crimson Peak. We find this style of film noir that suits the filmmaker so well.

Finally, the fairground universe can recall Christopher Nolan’s approach to Prestige. We think about it with this shot at the end of the Rooney Mara trailer on an electric channel that we hope is fake. Only if the director of Tenet ended up doing his fantastic part, del Toro shouldn’t cross the line. What to attract even more our curiosity.

Nightmare Alley will be to discover January 19, 2022 in French theaters, or one month after the American release.
