In an interview, Shang Chi actor Simu Liu spoke about his MCU role and expressed his desire for really crazy MCU team-ups.
Anyone who has seen “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” should have an idea why Marvel Studios has only now considered the Asian superhero Shang-Chi with a film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). And that despite the fact that he was still on a list of characters with Hulk, Iron-Man and Co. at the beginning. Although director Destin Daniel Cretton’s film starts quite conventionally, it quickly transitions into a fantasy setting that has more in common with wuxia films like “Tiger and Dragon” and “House of Flying Daggers” than with the previous ones MCU movies. But those who get involved will get an insight into the mythological depths that are still hidden in the MCU.
For Simu Liu it is undoubtedly the biggest role of his career so far. The 32-year-old has only appeared in small supporting roles and in the sitcom Kim’s Convenience. For years he kept his head above water with small jobs such as stock photos. The role of Shang-Chi aka Shaun changed his life – and landed him more lucrative jobs. He starred in the adventure film “Arthur the King” alongside Mark Wahlberg.

Not unimportant for fans to know: “Shang Chi 2” has already been announced, which is no wonder given the success the film has enjoyed as an origin story for an all-new superhero. He is particularly happy about the return of director Cretton, like Simu Liu in an interview with Complex revealed:
“He’s such an important part of the success of the film. And I want to mention that I often get disproportionate credit for the film’s success. But it was really, really Destin [Daniel Cretton]. You know, it’s the filmmaker and storyteller. It’s his thing. His return now means we get to experience all of this again, which is great. And then to see what else he’s involved in at Disney and Marvel makes me incredibly happy for him. I think he deserves all the things in the world and all the success. He is a truly special filmmaker.”
And what should be of interest in terms of content: How will Shang-Chi join the Avengers? Liu has already thought about this:
“How will Shaun fit in with the rest of the MCU? who will you see What crazy team ups [wird es geben]? What connections, easter eggs? I’m still in the dark like everyone else, so I hardly know anything. But I look forward to throwing myself into this process.”
Shang-Chi side by side with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor or Tom Holland’s Spider-Man? Yes, please! Already in “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” there were some Easter eggs and especially cameo appearances that caused open mouths. New Marvel star: This is how Simu Liu deals with online hate
As is so often the case, with success comes the envious and haters. Simu Liu had to experience that too. For example, when he was just announced as Shang-Chi, there was a poll in which some found him “too ugly for the MCU”. All the online hate didn’t go unnoticed:
“I’ve had bad, bad days where I would go through Twitter and feel bad about the things people were saying about me. But then you go out into the real world and into life – and nobody would say that to your face.”
So he decided to focus on things that bring him joy and inner peace. And with the success that he is now experiencing and will experience in the future, the few envious people can be equal to him.
