Newspapers see Ajax missing opportunities: ‘Ajax forced the bad luck’

Ajax played at home against the moderately performing Vitesse on Wednesday evening. The team from Amsterdam could take over the lead from PSV with a victory, but this did not happen. Ajax got no further than a 2-2 draw and so the Dutch newspapers have little positive to say about Schreuder and his team.

De Telegraaf: ‘Ajax played unimaginatively and at a much too slow pace’

The Telegraph sees Ajax not handling the opportunities well, while Vitesse strikes in the switch. “Two sledgehammer blows from Million Manhoef, the son of martial artist Melvin Manhoef, were too much for Alfred Schreuder’s team against Vitesse, who played poorly, but nevertheless missed countless opportunities.” This draw also meant that Ajax had to collect goals again. ‘It was the twelfth game in a row for Ajax in all competitions in which a clean sheet was not kept. Ajax played unimaginatively and at a much too slow pace.’

Algemeen Dagblad: ‘Ajax wouldn’t be the Ajax of this season if it didn’t also let Vitesse come back

The General Newspaper sees Ajax relinquish a lead again. ‘Ajax wouldn’t be the Ajax of this season if it didn’t also bring Vitesse back after Go Ahead, Napoli, Volendam and RKC. Of all Eredivisie clubs, Ajax received the most shots from outbreaks this season.’ In addition, the newspaper sees that Ajax’s defense was as leaky as a basket during the 1-2. ‘This time Manhoef was completely free, because no one was still in the Ajax half during a counterattack. Steven Berghuis (too late) and keeper Remko Pasveer (not free) could not avert the apparent doomsday scenario.’

Volkskrant: ‘Ajax forced the bad luck’

Also de Volkskrant sees a mediocre Ajax. ‘Unbelievable, what indecision Ajax showed in front of goal, as a result of poor concentration, lack of coherence and decisiveness’, the newspaper writes. Ajax hit the crossbar twice and the post twice despite the lesser game. No coincidence according to the Volksrant. ‘Ajax forced the breakdown.’ In addition, the newspaper also saw a lounging Jürrien Timber at the 1-1. ‘That summed up Ajax’s entire evening. Like, it’s going to work out. But it didn’t go smoothly.’

Het Parool: ‘Two mistakes by the sloppy Timber enabled Manhoef to score twice’

The parole is not pleased with the sloppiness within Schreuder’s team. For example, Timber was not careful on several occasions. “Two mistakes by the sloppy Timber enabled Manhoef to score twice.” The central defender also did not look good with Vitesse’s second goal. ‘In the 74th minute, Ajax was again presented with a smoothly counterattacking Manhoef. A goal that Timber, due to a half-soft intervention, was allowed to charge.’
