A bill was passed in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Monday that once it becomes law, the NEET exam will not be conducted in the state. To ensure social justice, admission in medical colleges will be given on the basis of marks scored in class 12. Simultaneously, the issue of a student who committed suicide before appearing in the National Entrance and Eligibility Test (NEET) resonated in the Assembly.

The main opposition party AIADMK targeted the state government over the incident. Chief Minister MK Stalin introduced the bill which was supported by Congress, AIADMK, PMK and other parties.

The Bharatiya Janata Party staged a walkout from the house opposing this move of the government. As per the provisions of the Bill, admission to undergraduate level courses in medical colleges in Tamil Nadu will be granted on the basis of marks obtained in Class 12 in Medical, Dental, Indian Medicine and Homeopathy.

Earlier, as soon as the proceedings of the House began, Leader of the Opposition K. Palaniswami raised the issue of Dhanush, a 19-year-old student who committed suicide in his home district of Salem on Sunday, and criticized the government. He said the DMK had promised to ‘cancel’ NEET but it was not done and many students were not prepared for it. Some of Palaniswami’s statements were omitted from the record by Speaker M Appavu.

Dhanush, who lives in a village near Salem, committed suicide hours before appearing for the NEET exam on Sunday as he was afraid of failing in the exam. What is contained in the bill?
Citing the suggestions of the high level committee in the bill, it has been said that the government has decided to do away with the requirement of NEET for admission to undergraduate medical courses, admission to such courses will be given on the basis of marks obtained in the qualifying examination.
