Narbonne: place des Pyrénées, the traffic lights will give way to a new roundabout

On this strategic sector of traffic in the city center, the town hall wants to experiment with a new configuration. The objective: to make vehicle traffic more fluid.

“Fluidify and facilitate traffic at the level of the Place des Pyrénées, which is very congested”, this is the ambition of the town hall explains Sophie Pons-Pelofy, elected delegate for public space. In the center of this square which notably serves boulevard Joffre (towards the media library), boulevard Lacroix (towards the hospital), avenue Leclerc (towards Espace Liberté), and avenue de Toulouse (towards St -Jean St-Pierre), a roundabout-type intersection will be tested. “The objective is in particular to improve the connection from the boulevard du Docteur Lacroix to the avenue de Toulouse, as well as to facilitate the exit from the place des Cévennes”, says the deputy mayor.

The preparation of the site and the installation of the temporary device began this week. Machines and diggers are therefore at work on the Place des Pyrénées. “The installation of the roundabout is scheduled for the beginning of August. The traffic lights will be taken out of service and signs and temporary safety markings will materialize the directions and traffic routes”.

The preparatory work before the extinction of the traffic lights takes place until the end of July.

Until the end of September, a first test phase will allow the City to assess the impact of this new development. “If necessary, adaptations can then be considered, before the implementation of the final configuration”.

Julie, 38 years old, employed in a shop: “In 1997, there was already a roundabout on the Place des Pyrénées… and there were only accidents! When a light is red, we stop and we don’t try to force our way through Nowadays, with the increase in the number of cars and the appearance of scooters, I think there will be more traffic accidents. And it will remove parking spaces, at least a dozen in front of the bar la Cigale”.

Paco, 68 years old, resident: “I live on rue Mazagran, and I have to take a long walk to get home. But I don’t think a roundabout will improve anything! We risk having major traffic jams on each side of the road. Place des Pyrénées It would have been better to take care of the buildings that are in danger of collapsing rue Mazagran. Or to create a diversion for those arriving from Carcassonne and entering the city center”.

With traffic lights, it jams all the time and there are accidents. Besides, you have to be careful when you pass by there, because it happens that some green lights come on at the same time! But we should be careful how we use our money, because the Place des Pyrénées changes direction of traffic every 3 years. Otherwise, the development of a roundabout is good news”.

Nathalie, 45 years old, resident: “I am for the installation of a roundabout: the crossing of pedestrians will be facilitated, traffic too and it will therefore bring people to the shops around the square. In addition, we could create a car park instead of ‘one of the collapsing buildings in Mazagran Street’.
