Johnny Cage is one of the franchise’s most charismatic heroesMortal Kombat‘ in both the games and the 1995 film adaptation.
Known for his great humor, Cage is a Hollywood star and a talented martial artist who was branded as Goro’s archenemy because of the iconic fight between them in the movie. Paul WS Anderson.
Despite being absent from the 2021 reboot, the end of the long teased that Cage will be part of the sequel, which was confirmed by the screenwriter. Jeremy Slater.
During an interview for the comic bookthe filmmaker said he doesn’t know if the character will get much emphasis in the new movie, but it will definitely be there.
“Johnny Cage is one of my favorite characters, and I think there’s a promise at the end of the first movie when we see Cole saying, ‘Okay, my next stop is to recruit Johnny.’ So I think if he wasn’t included in the sequel, it would be really weird.”
“We still don’t know how important he will be in what’s to come, but he will definitely be included, that’s one of the things we’re currently working on. But yeah, I love Johnny and I would love to live up to him and bring to the screen everything that makes the character such a fun, authentic guy.”
Previously, Slater told the The Direct that the script for the sequel is already halfway done.
The filmmaker commented on the mistakes of the previous film, which was released last year, and explained that the aim of the sequel is to create something that lives up to the expectations of the fans.
“It’s been a lot of fun so far. We’re already halfway through the script and I’m working very closely with the director, the studio people, the game guys, and I think – I can’t say anything about the story itself – but I think they definitely learned some lessons from the first one. film and I’m sure that we will now deliver something that lives up to the expectations of the fans.”
“This time we know what the public liked and what they didn’t, we know what went right and wrong and we’re working on that. So we’re really looking at this as a chance to take everything that worked on the first one and make it even better to give the audience what they deserve. Something really satisfying, exciting and unpredictable.”
For those who don’t know, Slater also wrote the script for the reboot of ‘Fantastic Four’ and the acclaimed series do ‘moon knight‘.
Asked if the Warner intends to build a universe compared to the MCU for the films of the ‘Mortal Kombat’he said he doesn’t believe this is the studio’s goal.
“I don’t think it will have the same tone as the MCU, but it will definitely have some of my sensibilities in that regard. That was part of my speech as we discussed ideas. We are doing ‘Mortal Kombat’… We’ve got guys that are ripping faces off and spitting fire – it’s a strange universe, let’s embrace some of that weirdness and let’s make a sequel that no one is expecting and that might surprise everyone.”
At the beginning of the year, Slater had already shared on Twitter that the sequel will be even bigger and SACRITER than the first film.
“I am very excited to be part of this team! We’re building something even bigger, better, and way bloodier that will blow everyone away.” revealed Slater.

In the first film, Shang Tsung (Chin Han) attempts to prevent the realization of Mortal Kombat by sending his Outworld warriors to assassinate Earth’s champions in order to enslave the planet. Because of this, fighters on both sides don’t even have time to train for official duels and focus on personal battles.
However, this was a creative choice by the screenwriter. Greg Russian to ensure that this famous fighting event is portrayed naturally in the future.
During an interview for the colliderhe said that:
“I always imagined this first movie as a pre-tournament, it was more of an intro story to the main elements of the franchise. The next film will focus on the event itself, while the third will be about the aftermath of that tournament.”
After a short journey in theaters, the reboot of ‘Mortal Kombat‘ can now be checked on the streaming of HBO Max.
Simon McQuoid (‘Premonition 5‘) is responsible for the direction.
