Mortal Kombat was a big hit for Warner Bros, with the simultaneous release with HBO Max. The film was one of the first great titles in this model, breaking records on the streaming platform, it didn’t take long for the confirmation of the sequel, whose director makes it official.

Warner Bros and New Line began production on the feature with confirmation from screenwriter Jeremy Slater, and through a statement from deadlineSimon McQuoid, who directed the project, returns to helm the sequel.

McQuoid has a deep history in the video game space, as he helped direct several commercials for Halo, Call of Duty, and more, the first film was a huge personal project for the director.

The adaptation of the popular game franchise had the biggest opening weekend on HBO Max, with a total of 3.8 million viewers, but with the simultaneous release model on HBO Max gone, the Batman formula must be then with a short window of exclusives in theaters before going to streaming.

There are currently no plot details for Mortal Kombat 2, but it is believed that Johnny Cage will have some sort of role in the new film due to the post-credits scene from the previous film, the film may receive updates at the San Diego Comic Con panel at Saturday as reported by the article comic book.

The new Mortal Kombat movie is a reboot of the movie franchise. Initially, there is no connection with the other features already released.

“MMM fighter Cole Young seeks out Earth’s greatest fighters to stand against Outworld’s enemies in a battle for the fate of the universe,” reads the film’s official synopsis.

The newest cinematic installment in the classic video game series is directed by newcomer Simon McQuoid and produced by James Wan, based on a screenplay by Greg Russo.

The Mortal Kombat cast includes Josh Lawson, Jessica McNamee, Hiroyuki Sanada, Joe Taslim, Tadanobu Asano, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Lewis Tan, Chin Han and Sisi Stringer.

The Mortal Kombat movie is available on HBO Max.
