“Morbius” -FSK: Is the Marvel movie going to be as brutal as “Joker”?

The success of “Joker” only confirmed what was known after “Deadpool”. A high age rating does not have to be a disadvantage at the box office.

As reported by Indiwire, an R rating for “Morbius” is said to have been discussed at Sony Pictures, which in Germany would correspond to an FSK from 16 or 18 years of age. So far, they have relied on internal rumors and no specific announcements to make the statement. Nevertheless – there could have been something to it. In fact, after the PG-13 rating in the USA, it was already clear that the local FSK does not start at 16 or 18 years of age.

Morbius – Teaser-Trailer Deutsch

After “Joker” rose to become the most successful R-rated film of all time and also received several Oscar nominations, the studios, with the exception of Disney, could become a little more generous in terms of higher age ratings for superhero films. You have to keep in mind, however, that the filming of “Morbius” was completed in June 2019, long before the theatrical release of “Joker”.

FSK of “Morbius”

Still has FSK only rated the trailers, the theatrical release was postponed again to March 31, 2022. One FSK from 12 years, as with the trailers and similar to the USA, seems more than likely.

Which film universe does “Morbius” belong to?

The superhero film “Morbius” is part of Sony’s Marvel universe, which began with “Venom”. There, the villains / anti-heroes from the Spider-Man comics get their own solo films and that so far quite independently of the current Spidey films with Tom Holland.

An R rating was discussed very early on for “Venom”, which, to the chagrin of the fans, was not realized. Maybe Sony dares to use a higher age rating this time, after all, Morbius is a real vampire.

The competitor DC-Comics is already one step further. Warner brought out the R-rated superhero film “Birds of Prey” and “The Suicide Squad”, directed by “Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn, took a tougher direction.

This is what “Morbius” is about

In “Morbius”, Jared Leto plays a brilliant scientist who suffers from a rare blood disease and who is committed to an alternative healing method. As a result, he comes into contact with an ancient virus that gives him superpowers and in turn turns him into a bloodthirsty vampire.
