“All good things come in threes” – that’s what the UFC probably thought when setting up the fight card for UFC 286. In the main fight this Saturday, March 18th, the two welterweights Leon Edwards and Kamaru Usman will face each other for the third time. The record is currently balanced: Usman triumphed (unanimous decision) in the first meeting in December 2015, when both were not yet at the level they are today. Edwards then won the rematch in August 2022 with a spectacular headkick knockout late in the fifth and final round.
The second bout was also a lot more significant than the first because it was the welterweight title that was at stake – Usman had previously defended the belt five times in a row. Now a third fight should decide the trilogy, of course it’s again about the welterweight championship today. It’s Edwards’ first title defense.
