Milovanović: ‘Succeeding at Ajax is not only my dream, but also the goal’

Mateja Milovanović sees succeeding at Ajax not only as a dream, but also as a goal. That is what the eighteen-year-old defender of Jong Ajax tells in the Ajax Life Magazine. Milovanović made the switch from Sparta Rotterdam to Ajax in 2018 and plays a lot in Jong Ajax this season.

The Ajax defender has a clear goal in mind in Amsterdam. ‘Succeeding at Ajax is not only my dream, but also the goal. Now it mainly feels like a dream that is slowly approaching. But I still have a lot to improve. I take it step by step.’ Milovanović plays his youth internationals for Serbia and sees a clear difference with Ajax. ‘Especially on a physical and mental level. Here at Ajax we are technically better, in the national youth team the players are extremely motivated and physically very strong.’

As a Serbian youth international, Milovanović naturally respects Dusan Tadić. The Jong Ajax player and the Ajax captain met for the first time in Belgrade, at Tadić’s personal trainer. Andrew introduced us. Of course I knew who Dusan Tadić was, but I had never spoken to him at Ajax. Dusan knew who I was, which was nice to hear. Now we talk to each other more often and sometimes I also train with the first team.’

“Now that I’m at Jong Ajax, football is physically more serious than at Ajax Under 19”

Milovanović is inspired by Tadić, the defender says. ‘Especially his leadership. That’s something I still have to grow into. I’m a bit quieter by nature. Furthermore, Dusan is a top athlete who is always in the gym. I invest a lot in that too. I even have my own fitness room at home. Now that I’m at Jong Ajax, football is physically more serious than at Ajax Under 19.’
