The resigning president of the CD&V, Joachim Coens, brought together the ministers of the party to discuss a “global package”, we learned in the ranks of the Flemish party, in clear decline in the polls.
One thing is certain at this stage: a successor must be found for Wouter Beke as Flemish Minister for Welfare, Health and the Fight against Poverty. The former president of CD&V announced his resignation as Flemish minister on Thursday evening. A decision must be taken in principle this Monday, the day when the party council will meet and give a “binding opinion” on Wouter Beke’s successor.
But the party may also have to find a replacement for Sammy Mahdi for the post of Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration. The latter is the favorite to occupy the presidency of the Flemish Christian Democrats. The name of the new president will in principle be known at the end of June.
