MCU Star Responds to Scorsese and Tarantino After Destroying Marvel Movies

Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino and other filmmakers have set the internet abuzz with criticism of Marvel movies – and the way Disney has changed the cinematic ecosystem. Who did not like the comments at all was Simu Liu, the protagonist of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. On social media, the actor responded to all the criticism.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, it’s worth remembering, hit theaters in 2021, becoming one of Marvel’s main hits in the post-pandemic world.

In addition to Canadian actor Simu Liu in the lead role, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings features Awkwafina (Ocean’s 8), Michelle Yeoh (The Witcher: Origin) and Tony Leung (Hero) in the cast.

We reveal below how the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star responded to Scorsese and Tarantino’s criticism of the MCU.

Simu Liu Didn’t Like Tarantino’s MCU Criticisms

In an interview with an American podcast, Quentin Tarantino – one of the most acclaimed filmmakers today – made scathing criticism of Marvel films.

Tarantino, for those unfamiliar, is responsible for hits like Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, Inglourious Basterds and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

According to the filmmaker, the MCU is primarily responsible for the “death” of movie stars and stars.

“Part of the ‘Marvelization’ of Hollywood is… you have these actors who only become famous playing these characters. But they’re not stars, right? Captain America is the star. Or Thor,” commented the actor.

According to Tarantino, many spectators go to the cinema to see the heroes and villains, not necessarily their performers.

“I mean, I don’t think I’m the first person to say that. It’s been said a zillion times. In these franchises, it’s the characters that become stars”, opined the director.

Tarantino’s opinion is similar to that of Martin Scorsese. The director of films like Goodfellas and Taxi Driver said that Marvel films “are not cinema”, comparing productions to “amusement park attractions”.

After Tarantino’s statements, Simu Liu – the star of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings – took to Twitter to express his opinion.

“If the only ‘guardians’ of movie stardom were Tarantino and Scorsese, I would never have the opportunity to helm a $400+ million movie. I marvel at their cinematic genius. They are transcendent authors. But you can’t turn your nose up at me or anyone else,” replied the actor.

Surprisingly, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes (98%) is higher than that of all of Tarantino’s films.

“No studio is or will ever be perfect. But I’m proud to work with those who make continuous efforts to improve diversity on screen, creating heroes who inspire people in all communities, everywhere.”
