The winter sports world mourns. The Slovenian freestyle snowboarder Marko Grilc died in a tragic accident in Tyrol. Particularly tragic: his fiancée is pregnant with their third child.

Marko Grilc, † 38, had been part of the snowboard scene for over two decades and was considered the most successful freestyle snowboarder in Slovenia. Now the professional athlete and family man is dead. According to the Slovenian media, he was killed in a fall on the Tiefenbach glacier near Sölden.

Marko Grilc fell on a rock

Grilc was there on Tuesday, November 23, 2021, in a currently closed ski area for filming with his team. “In the course of exploring the terrain, the man was brought uphill in a ski boot so that he could ski down in the open ski area through untracked powder snow near the Mutkogel tow lift,” explains the Austrian police. The 38-year-old fell while driving on the piste for a previously unknown cause and hit his head against a rock covered with snow. He is said to have not worn a helmet. He suffered life-threatening head injuries to which he ultimately succumbed despite all attempts at resuscitation on site.
