After the crime, Iago presented himself to the police and gave details of what had happened, including where he had killed Rita and where he had abandoned her body. Deputy André Renato Ramos da Silva, who is following the case, did not consider arrest necessary as Iago came forward spontaneously and made an informal confession. The only sanction received by Iago was removal from the Nursing Residency Program at UFRJ.

The investigators of the case are waiting for the expert reports to assess whether Iago should be arrested or not. According to the police station, the law guarantees that, when the criminal presents himself, he can no longer be arrested in the act.
