The frontwoman of the punk band Pussy Riot fled Russia earlier this week, where she was under house arrest. Now the musicians, who are critical of the Kremlin, are starting their tour in Berlin – and taking a stand against the war in Ukraine.

The Kremlin-critical women’s punk band Pussy Riot gave their first concert on their current European tour “Pussy Riot Anti-War Tour”. As the “Berliner Morgenpost” reports, among other things, the Russian musicians around the front woman Maria Alyokhina also performed with their famous knitted hat masks in the Berlin broadcasting house.

The long-planned tour could only start under special circumstances: Alyokhina was under house arrest in Moscow to the end and had to flee her homeland. As her lawyer said, she disguised herself as a food delivery woman and was able to escape her guards at her place of residence. The “New York Times” then reported that Alyokhina had driven through Belarus to Lithuania in the EU. “I’m glad I made it,” she said in a statement.

A total of 19 concerts

The Pussy Riot musicians repeatedly clashed with the Russian authorities because of their progressive nature. The so-called “Punk Prayer” in February 2012 in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow attracted the most international attention. They performed in front of the altar for 41 seconds without permission and were then arrested. All members were sentenced to two years imprisonment, sparking international dismay.

The current tour is mainly characterized by the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, which the Pussy Riot musicians sharply condemned. A total of 19 appointments are scheduled. In Germany, according to their Facebook announcement, Aljochina and Co. are still performing in Rostock, Kassel, Munich, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Tübingen and Völklingen. They will celebrate the end of the tour on June 9th in Lisbon, Portugal.
