Davy Klaassen looks back on a ‘top evening’, as he shows in an interview with the NOS. The Dutch national team played a tough game against Senegalbut partly thanks to a goal from the Ajax player, the Dutch won 0-2 and successfully started the World Cup.
The midfielder started on the bench and watched with excitement. “We said on the bench: one moment will decide this game. When Cody’s (Gakpo, ed.) goal fell, I thought: this will be all right. That must always be the feeling. It can always happen, but I didn’t feel it would go wrong.’
The Ajax player came in in the 79th minute and initially had to break open the match. After all, the glasses position was still on the board. In the end it was Gakpo who really broke open the game, after which Klaassen closed the game. ‘It felt great. A World Cup is what everyone dreams of. If you can score and win then: a top evening’, says Klaassen.
The game of Orange was a bit syrupy. Few chances were created by both teams, Klaassen notes. “It was a difficult match. There weren’t really many chances on either side. I think we deserved to win in the end, but it was a different kind of opponent than what we play against in Europe.’
Klaassen happy with successful start
All in all, it was a successful start to the World Cup for the Dutch national team. The fact that the game was not yet convincing is not yet a cause for concern. “If you look at the scoreboard, you can say that. I’m just happy. We insisted that it is important to start the first match well. We can continue with that’, concludes the number ten.
