- Jonny Bairstow is a regular member of Sunrisers team
- Malan made his IPL debut with Kings
- Jonny Bairstow scored 248 runs in seven matches
Sunrisers Hyderabad opener Jonny Bairstow, Punjab Kings batsman David Malan and Delhi Capitals all-rounder Chris Woakes have decided to pull out of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL 2021) due to personal reasons.
Players from England and India had to undergo a ‘bubble to bubble transfer’ (moving from the bio-secure environment of Manchester to the bio-secure environment of the UAE) by Charterday aircraft to join their IPL teams. After the postponement of the fifth Test between the two countries due to the outbreak of Kovid-19 in the Indian team, the franchise teams have to make their own travel arrangements for the players.
The fifth Test was also postponed indefinitely after the Indian team’s assistant physio tested positive for the virus. Earlier, other members of India’s support staff, including head coach Ravi Shastri, are already in isolation after being tested positive for COVID-19 during the fourth Test at The Oval.
All players arriving in Dubai will now have to self-isolate for six days and this could be one of the reasons for Bairstow and Malan to be out of the league.
A BCCI official said that both the players will not be a part of the IPL to be played again from September 19. “They will not board the flight to UAE,” the official said. One of the reasons for his withdrawal is the six-day quarantine, which he was not required to do earlier.
While Bairstow is a regular member of the Sunrisers team, the same world number one T20 batsman Malan made his IPL debut with the Kings earlier this year. Bairstow had scored 248 runs in seven matches at the start of this season at a strike rate of over 141.
Both Bairstow and Malan were part of the England Test team in Manchester. There is also doubt over the presence of England all-rounder Chris Woakes in the IPL. He plays for Delhi Capitals.
Players are being impressed by the challenge of living in the Bio-Bubble. After the IPL, the T20 World Cup is also to be organized in the UAE. In such a situation, the players withdrawing from the IPL will get a chance to spend more time with the family.
