Five years after the last Pirates of the Caribbean film, Johnny Depp returns as a crazy adventurer in the short film Adventurer’s Game.
It’s been a long time since fans have seen Johnny Depp in an eccentric, wacky role. It’s exactly these guys like Captain Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka and Charles Mortdecai with a penchant for madness that made the 59-year-old even more famous, successful and popular than he already was at the time. He was last seen like this in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales – that’s five years ago.
In general, Depp’s screen appearances have been rare in recent years – not only in the roles that his fans love for him. Because he fell victim to the Cancel culture, initially lost sympathy through the accusations of his ex-wife Amber Heard and then many film roles such as Gellert Grindelwald in the “Fantastic Beasts” series, which ultimately went to Mads Mikkelsen.
But after his trial victory against Heard, in which he was awarded around 10 million US dollars in damages, Depp is gradually making progress again. He was just on a European tour with musician Jeff Beck, and next year he’ll be returning to Germany for six more concerts with his band Hollywood Vampires, which also includes Alice Cooper and Aerosmith’s Joe Perry.
And when it comes to films, his career is slowly but surely moving again. You don’t have to wait long before you can see Johnny Depp in a crazy role again, because the short film has just been made “Adventurer’s Game” released. In it, Depp plays the quirky and nearly blind seafarer and adventurer Phillip Artoosh. Appearance, clothing style and even the character look like they’re straight out of a “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie, which you can all stream on Disney+, by the way. A must for fans:
As you can easily see, this is a short film for the mobile game “Sea of Dawn” by the Chinese developer Mosasaur Studio. And Depp had a free hand in designing his character, as he revealed in a small making-of:
“If there’s an opportunity for humor, I’ll grab it. That’s exactly what I want to see, I want a character with the right chutzpah to do things I would never do. […] This part of the creation process [eines Charakters] I love exploring, digging, trying to find those pieces and putting them together. When I first read the script, I automatically take notes. I’m not even thinking about what I’m writing, just thoughts bam.”
Too bad Phillip Artoosh will probably never have his own film or be part of another. The scenery would also have worked with an old Captain Jack Sparrow.
Jeanne du Barry: Johnny Depp’s next film project
Depp will soon be appearing on the big screen in the costume drama Jeanne du Barry. In the film by director and screenwriter Maïwenn Le Besco, who also plays the leading role, he slips into the role of the French king Louis XV. At his court, the poor seamstress Jeanne du Barry managed to rise to the rank of mistress in 1743.
It doesn’t sound like a role that leaves a lot of room for humor and personal interpretation. But Depp has proven often enough that he can elicit something special from every role. And for his fans, it should be enough just to see him in a movie again.
