On April 1 and 2, 2023, take advantage of the European Days of Crafts to discover the bookbinding and gilding workshop of the Bernardins, present in the capital since 1860.
At the beginning of April, head for the 5th arrondissement for the European Days of Crafts ! During this 17th edition, nearly 500 events are organized in Paris and Île-de-France, to introduce the general public to handicrafts and exceptional skills. Are you a fan of beautiful books? So the visit to theBernardin workshop is made for you, in order to have an overview of the traditional binding and gilding techniquesin a historic building.
Previously located in the large convent of the Bernardins, the workshop of the same name has housed many bookbinders since 1860. Some tools used at the time are still used daily, including the “guillotine”, created by Guillaume Massiquot around the middle of the 19th century. century. And since that time, thousands of old books passed through the hands of exceptional craftsmen to be repaired, covered, embellished and cared for.
