In the anti-Marvel film: action icon Sylvester Stallone becomes an Amazon superhero

Fans had to wait a long time for this moment. Sylvester Stallone’s Samaritan is about to be released. And there is a first trailer for it.

Superhumanly strong veteran Sylvester Stallone has embodied quite a few characters in his long career: Apart from the fact that the macho action type of the eighties already had bulletproof skin and a hit rate of 150 percent, Stallone also played Judge Dredd in the comic book adaptation of the same name as well the all-eating King Shark in The Suicide Squad. Even in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), he had a role as Stakar Ogord in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

The 76-year-old has not yet been seen as a superhero in the classic sense. That is now changing with the action drama “Samaritan”, but unfortunately not on the big screen in the cinema, but “only” in the home cinema via streaming. Because the producing studio MGM was known to have been bought by Amazon for 8.45 billion US dollars. And apparently some of those responsible found that “Samaritan” was better off as an exclusive Amazon event film. The trailer just released shows what subscribers can look forward to:

Sylvester Stallone is a battle-weary superhero in Samaritan

Mr. Smith (Sylvester Stallone) is an inconspicuous fellow who works as a garbage collector in Granite City and otherwise has little contact with his fellow human beings. There is a reason for that, because in reality he is a superhero. More specifically, he’s a Samaritan who disappeared from the scene 25 years ago after an incredible battle with Nemesis. Everyone thinks he’s dead. But not 13-year-old Sam Cleary (Jason Walton). He thinks he recognizes that superhero of the old days in his neighbor, Mr. Smith. For Sam it is clear that he has to draw him out of his reserve, because the city needs its superhero more than ever.

The trailer promises just the right mix of action and drama. “Samaritan” didn’t have a big budget, that much can be seen. But that doesn’t have to be the case for director Julius Avery’s (“Operation: Overlord”) film based on a screenplay by Bragi F. Schut (“Escape Room”). Because this is (hopefully) the focus of the connection and friendship between a boy and his idol, who also happens to be the greatest superhero of all time. This gives Stallone the opportunity to show once again that he can do more than just flex his muscles. But if he does start, probably from the last third, Stallone will outplay some of his younger colleagues in terms of action, according to Avery. No wonder, it’s now part of his DNA.

In addition to Stallone and Walton, Pilou Asbæk, Martin Starr, Dascha Polanco, Moises Arias and Sophia Tatum also play. “Samaritan” will be available from the August 26, 2022 made available via Amazon Prime Video.

There is a small drop of bitterness for fans who want to see the film with German synchro: Since “Creed II” Stallone is no longer spoken by his regular spokesman Thomas Danneberg, but by Jürgen Prochnow. For some, that might still sound like something that takes some getting used to at first.
