How did Dave Bautista go from the ring to the wish list of renowned film directors?

Before being successful as Drax in the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, Dave Bautista was a bodybuilder and MMA and Wrestling fighter, participating in WWE between 2002 and 2019.

After his retirement from the ring, he acted in several generic action films, filled with fight scenes, shootouts and explosions.

However, the star also caught the attention of renowned directors, collaborating with Sam Mendes in ‘007 Against Specter’with Dennis Villeneuve in ‘Blade Runner 2049’ and with Rian Johnson in the recent ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’.

This year he returns as Drax in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘, and also makes up the cast of ‘knock at the door‘, suspense of M. Night Shyamalanpraised director responsible for ‘The sixth Sense‘.

But how Bautista traded rings for the wish list of acclaimed directors?

During an interview for QA, Bautista was asked about the subject, as he could earn loads of money starring in action films, but he preferred to focus on more highly regarded titles.

“I never wanted to be the next The Rock,” he said. “I just want to be a good actor, you know? A respected actor. And I try to do that by facing my fear of failure. I may even fail, but I don’t let that fear stop me from taking risks.”

Before beginning his career in dramaturgy, Bautista remembers being embarrassed when he had to do interviews after his WWE matches, so he signed up for public speaking classes and realized that he too could use his brain instead of brawn.

From then on, he became more comfortable with the cameras and became one of the most beloved show man of sport, along with John Cena.

After that, Bautista remembers being inspired to act when The Rock started to be successful on the big screen. interested in acting, it wasn’t long before he joined the hall of action movie stars after starring in direct-to-DVD movies.

The actor argued that despite ‘paying the bills’, he wanted to challenge himself.

In 2014, the opportunity arose to play Drax, a burly assassin with a big heart and a childlike mindset, something that would make Bautista prove to yourself that you were in the right career.

At the same time, he auditioned for ‘007 Against Specter‘, and her performance was enough to convince mendes to fit him in the list.

From there came ‘Blade Runner: 2049′, Bautista began to be increasingly noticed in Hollywood, with major filmmakers praising how much his acting was evolving.

“Acting is this puzzle that I can’t figure out. You don’t know if you’re right, but sometimes you seem to do the right thing. I haven’t had many of these transformational moments, but they happen every now and then. For me there is nothing like it [a se transformar de acordo com o personagem]. It has already become an addiction.”

For him, the biggest motivation in his career as an actor is the fact of proving to himself that he can exceed expectations and move further and further away from that image of a simple fighter who has nothing to offer beyond his image.

“Honestly, I don’t give a shit about being a movie star. I’m not looking for a glamorous life. I live here in Tampa. I don’t care about the spotlight, I don’t care about the fame. I just want to be a better actor. I don’t want praise from my fellow actors, but respect. I don’t need compliments – I really don’t. For me, the great thing about being an actor is knowing that I achieved something.”
