We reveal below how comic books influenced the plot of Terra dos Sonhos, on Netflix; check out.

Terra dos Sonhos plot is inspired by an old comic on Netflix

The origins of Terra dos Sonhos, the new Netflix hit, go back to the beginning of the 20th century. Jason Momoa’s film is inspired by the comic book “Little Nemo in Slumberland” (Little Nemo in the Land of Dreams, pictured above), released by Winsor McCay between 1905 and 1927.

In a chat with an American website, filmmaker Francis Lawrence, director of Terra dos Sonhos, spoke about the film’s inspirations.

“I remember analyzing some of the original material, but our idea was always to take that idea and create our own stories, bringing the plot to a more contemporary universe”, commented the director.

One of the main changes between comics and film involves the gender of the main character. In the comics, Nemo is a boy, and in the Netflix production, she is a girl.

The character’s plot also undergoes many modifications. In the comics, for example, Nemo doesn’t team up with adventurer Flip to find his father.

That said, the film and comics work with the same premise: a child named Nemo who embarks on fantastic adventures in the world of dreams.

Francis Lawrence also revealed that the Flip character is not just based on the comics, but also on ideas from Jason Momoa and costume designer Trish Summerville.

“Because I didn’t have much knowledge of the original story, I was able to start Flip from scratch. We already knew that Jason (Momoa) would be the interpreter, because, in person, he has many elements to dialogue with a character like that”, explained Lawrence.

Surprisingly, the Netflix movie isn’t the first adaptation of Winsor McCay’s graphic novel.

In 1993, filmmaker Chris Columbus (famous for the first Harry Potter films), “Little Nemo: Dreams in Slumberland”, an animated adaptation of the HQ.

The animated musical only earned $2 million in theaters, but by 1993, it had become one of the most requested VHS tapes in video stores.
