Fans of well-groomed horror can be happy: As filmmaker Christophe Gans lets us know, a new “Silent Hill” film could be released as early as 2023.
When it comes to filming horror video games, the general public primarily thinks of the “Resident Evil” works, which will soon be expanded to include a new Netflix series. But the films based on developer Konami’s survival horror series “Silent Hill” were more faithful to the original and much scarier. The first film, 2006’s Silent Hill, was directed by Christophe Gans (Crying Freeman), who is a huge video game fan himself. That was definitely evident in his film adaptation, which was more atmospheric and eerie than 2012’s Silent Hill: Revelation, which was a disappointment in many ways, despite the presence of Kit Harington, Sean Bean and Carrie-Anne Moss.
In all this time, fans had not given up hope of finally getting a new “Silent Hill”, whether as a video game or as a film. The video game Silent Hills, which designer legend Hideo Kojima worked on alongside horror mastermind Guillermo del Toro and The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus, was canceled in 2015. So there’s only one movie left. And here you can breathe a sigh of relief: Because not only is Christophe Gans working on a new offshoot of the horror series, the film is even supposed to be 2023 come across as he did Jeux video let know:
“The script for the new ‘Silent Hill’ film is completely independent from the previous two films and pays tribute to the development of ‘Silent Hill’. Most of the time they are stand alone stories [in den Videospielen]. ‘Silent Hill’ is a bit like ‘Twilight Zone’, a place where anything can happen at any time. I’ve been working on a new ‘Silent Hill’ that’s supposed to be a 2023 one because that’s when it’s coming out. […] It’s a ‘Silent Hill’ for today’s audience while also being respectful of the saga. I realize that ‘Silent Hill’ is a great video game series and a work of art in every sense of the word.”
You can stream “Silent Hill” via Amazon
So Gans is not necessarily working on a reboot, but on another “Silent Hill” story. The special thing about the video game series is the fact that although different stories are told, they are always interwoven. In this way, they allow the players to take a new look at previous events. It remains to be seen whether and to what extent the previous films will be mentioned in the new “Silent Hill”. You can see which horror films you can still experience in 2022 in the video.
Silent Hill: Konami is reportedly working on new video games
The timing for a new horror film set in the Silent Hill universe couldn’t be better. Because Konami is said to be working on several new “Silent Hill” video games (via VGC). We’re talking about a remake of “Silent Hill 2”, which for many is the best part of the series, a direct sequel and a story-based offshoot in episodic format like “Life Is Strange”.
The remake itself is said to be the responsibility of the Polish developer Bloober Team, which drew attention to itself with “The Medium”. Incidentally, the music for this horror game was composed by Akira Yamaoka, who also provided the background music for the “Silent Hill” video games. And it is precisely this development studio that recently let it be known that it is working on an existing horror series from a well-known publisher.
Recognize horror films only by the clothes of the scary characters? Nothing easier than that, at least for die-hard fans:
