Gwyneth Paltrow’s mother hid cancer: ‘They shouldn’t have worried’

Christmas time will be extra sweet this year for the American actress Blythe Danner, because she is recovering from salivary gland cancer for the first time in years.

But the 79-year-old actress actually kept the diagnosis to herself for a long period of time.

She tells that People.

“I kept it a secret from my children for a long time,” says Blythe Danner and continues:

“I didn’t want them to worry.”

Blythe Danner is the mother of the actors Gwyneth Paltrow, who is known for her roles as Pepper Potts in the Marvel series, and Jake Paltrow, who she has with Bruce Paltrow.

Danner tells the media that it was exactly the same disease that affected her husband and ended up costing him his life back in 2002.

“Everyone is affected by cancer, but it is unusual for a couple to get the same form of cancer,” says Blythe Danner and continues:

“I remember looking up at the sky and saying to Bruce, ‘Are you lonely up there?'”

That’s why the diagnosis scared Gwyneth Paltrow when she finally got the message because it was so similar to Bruce Paltrow’s diagnosis.

In 2020, Blythe Danner had the cancerous tissue removed, and then she also had to go through both chemo and radiation. But she never feared death. The loss of Bruce Paltrow had changed her perception of her own mortality, she tells People.

“I think we’re all getting fatter. It’s a bit of shit, this disease. But I have had a career, wonderful children and a loving husband. I am very grateful.”
