James, interviewed by varietyexplained that he proposed making a holiday special during the post-production of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: “He was like, ‘Oh, we really should do this.’ I’m a big fan of Christmas. I love all the Christmas specials I saw as a kid and wanted to do something similar. But I also wanted to introduce the anarchy of the Guardians into all of that“.

Kevin Bacon was first choice and Gunn explained: “Kevin doesn’t like Christmas. For me that part was hilarious. I saw Kevin arrive on set in what was supposed to be his house and it was full of all these inflatable decorations. It was like Santa threw up all over Bacon’s house, which has no connection to Kevin Bacon’s real house. He has this typical Los Angeles look, which is not Kevin’s style at all. But he’s just so lovely, so talented, professional, egoless and just a really nice person. That part of the character is like him in real life“.

The director explained that Kevin Feige, even though Bacon starred in X-Men: First Class or could be involved in the MCU in the future, did not have any objections regarding the casting: “What really struck me about the way Kevin Feige is handling the MCU is that what matters most to him is the project in front of him. You can have a plan for how you want to move forward, but if it ruins what’s in front of you, then it’s not working. The best thing for the holiday special is Kevin Bacon, and that means it doesn’t matter if Kevin Bacon is a different character later in the MCU. It is not real. None of this is real. He was the perfect person to cast for the role of Kevin Bacon. If we had cast John Schneider as Kevin Bacon, it wouldn’t have worked well“.
