Gard: at the Garrigues camp, Florence Parly, the Minister of the Armed Forces in the field and in the campaign

Florence Parly, the Minister of the Armed Forces, was visiting this Friday, January 14 to judge the first effects of a military programming law which comforts the Army which, according to her, has been neglected.

The visit had been scheduled several times. And we had to wait until the end of the five-year term to see Florence Parly in the Gard where some 5,000 soldiers live and work. At the invitation of Françoise Dumas, the deputy of the 1st district and president of the Defense commission at the National Assembly, the Minister of the Armies was, indeed, in the Gard, this Friday.

She was notably accompanied by Generals Éric Ozanne and Pierre Schill. The first commands the 6th Light Armored Division (DLB). With 7,500 men, it is made up of seven regiments in the south-east of France. Its staff is in Nîmes. The second is the Chief of Staff of the Army.

The Minister began her visit to the 503rd Train Regiment, at the Saint-Gilles military base. She pursued her to the Garrigues camp. On this vast space of 5,000 hectares, which hosts numerous formations and two regiments, and which she described as “soul of the army”, the Minister came to greet the soldiers, whether officers, non-commissioned officers or simple soldiers, to pay tribute to them for “the strength of your commitment” and see, on the ground, the first effects of the military programming law.

Over the period 2019-2025, this law in question devotes 295 billion euros intended for the renovation and modernization of the infrastructures and equipment of the armed forces. The Sixth Light Armored Division (DLB) is a pilot for the Scorpion program which more specifically concerns the Army. It will have been fully equipped by the end of 2023.

A sometimes political discourse

“You who give everything for France, you deserve better working, living and training conditions. The President of the Republic wanted this ambitious law because the Army has been neglected for too long and its equipment is aging “, said the minister in a sometimes political speech where it was a question of highlighting the means deployed a few weeks before the presidential election.

As part of this military programming law, the Garrigues camp received funding of €50 million which enabled it to acquire, among other things, 1,700 Glock pistols and 1,200 HK 416 assault rifles. The 2nd Foreign Infantry Regiment of Nîmes received its first Griffons, latest-generation armored vehicles, flagships of connected ground combat already in external operations in Mali.

“On continue d’investing”, added the minister. On the Garrigues site, an imposing building will see the light of day by the end of the year for the parking and maintenance of vehicles. “We don’t do it to the detriment of the environment, she clarified. We have reduced our carbon footprint here. And in this Natura 2000 classified area, we are committed to protecting biodiversity and in particular Bonelli’s eagle.”

Efforts to be made on housing

“Accommodation and housing are two areas where we must continue our efforts. We have not been able to catch up in five years with the delay taken over the past thirty years, but we have begun a 90° turn”, said Florence Parly who mentioned the need to renovate, where necessary, the buildings in the barracks.

It also announced, by 2027, the creation for soldiers living in Nîmes of 85 new homes. They are part of a vast national plan of one billion euros. The Minister also specified that in the Gard prefecture, 40 places will also be created in daycare for the children of the military.

On the sidelines of her visit to Nîmes and on the initiative of Françoise Dumas, Florence Parly met at the end of the day Jean-Paul Fournier, the mayor of Nîmes, who had been represented during the minister’s visit.
