Tomás Galásek celebrates his fiftieth birthday on Sunday and played in Ajax’s shirt between 2000 and 2006. The Czech midfielder came over from Willem II and is very happy to have played for the team from Amsterdam. on the club website of Ajax, the former football player looks back on this period.
‘I knew it wouldn’t be easy at Ajax, but I gladly accepted the challenge. There are players who are not considered good enough after a year, but luckily I was able to play for Ajax for six years.’ The midfielder is particularly proud of this period in the capital. “They said my modesty couldn’t deal with the harshness of the club. Many people told me that Ajax was a cold club, but I never experienced it that way. Ajax has become family to me.’
A player that Galásek was very impressed with is Jari Litmanen. ‘I had been playing at Ajax for two seasons when Jari returned. From the first moment you saw how popular he was with the supporters, thousands of supporters came to his first training.’ The Finnish club icon is praised for his mentality. “He was very professional, he was busy day and night with football. Although he was often injured, he made a huge impression on me.’
Become a head coach
After his career as a football player, the former Ajax player decided to enter the coaching profession. He is currently assistant national coach of the Czech Republic. He certainly has the ambition to become a head coach. ‘But now I especially want to learn a lot from other experienced trainers. I still have a contract until 2024 as assistant national coach, so the head coachship is something for later. Whether that will be in the Czech Republic, Germany or the Netherlands, the future will tell.’
