In the brutal action film “Violent Night” by the “John Wick” team, David Harbor becomes Santa Claus who has to save a family – in a bloodthirsty way.
Every now and then a big Hollywood studio dares an experiment that would otherwise only be thematically located in the independent area with a clear B-movie and trash orientation. Anyone remember Battlefield Earth or the Rollerball remake? Universal Pictures is now working on such a work: “Violent Night”. Of course, one can hope that the result will be better received than in the films mentioned.
Judging by the reactions to the excerpts shown at CinemaCon, the action film described as “Die Hard with Santa Claus” with “Stranger Things” and “Black Widow” star David Harbor should definitely be on the wish list as a happy and deadly gift giver many action fans land (via Comicbook.com). That shouldn’t come as a surprise, because the team led by filmmaker and producer David Leitch from 87North is responsible for “Violent Night”, which has already released action hits like “John Wick”, “Nobody” and the “Fast & Furious” spin-off “Hobbs & Shaw” unleashed on cinema audiences. And the director here was none other than Tommy Wirkola, who provided the bloodiest entertainment with films such as “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters”, “What Happened to Monday” and most recently “The Trip – A Murderous Weekend”.
David Harbour, who plays Santa Claus in the film and has to save a family from the clutches of kidnappers, was personally present at the presentation and impressively swore the audience into the film:
“What about movies that make you sweat? Don’t you love action movies too? Who doesn’t love great action movies, right? How about Christmas movies? So how about a movie that is a great action movie and the best Christmas movie rolled into one? ,Die Hard’. The damn ‘Die Hard’. What if… wait a minute, wait a minute. What if the genius director Tommy Wirkola and the badass producers of 87North, you know, the crazies who made ‘Atomic Blonde’ and ‘John Wick’ and ‘Nobody’ and ‘Hobbs & Shaw’ were behind it all that would stick? And, wait a minute, what if I starred in it as fucking Santa? Oh, am I swinging a fucking hammer? Yes. What you’re about to see isn’t a real trailer, but don’t cry. Better not pout. I’ll also tell you why: Because Santa Claus is coming to town!”
Unfortunately, only those present could see the trailer. But you’ll also get to see some cinema highlights this year, as you can see from the video.
“Violent Night”: Santa Claus slaughters the bad guys
Anyone who knows Tommy Wirkola’s films, but especially “The Trip”, knows that the Norwegian filmmaker is not squeamish when it comes to depicting violence. And so the shown excerpts from “Violent Night” should do the title credit, be extremely bloody and anything but adult-free. Harbors Santa even grilled one of the meanies with an electric poinsettia.
In addition to Harbour, “Violent Night” also stars John Leguizamo, Beverly D’Angelo, Alex Hassell and Edi Patterson. The screenplay was written by Sonic the Hedgehog writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller, of all people. The US theatrical release is on December 2, 2022.
The Christmas movies in this quiz certainly aren’t as gory as the upcoming Violent Night:
