With “Knock at the Cabin” M. Night Shyamalan once again wants to shock and surprise the audience. He was surprised himself: by Dave Bautista.
Ever since 1999’s filmmaking breakthrough with the chilling mystery film The Sixth Sense, audiences have come to expect a shocking twist on every M. Night Shyamalan film that takes everything that happened before head turns. For many other filmmakers, that would be a pressure under which they would eventually collapse. Not so the Indian-born director. Shyamalan loves cinema and he loves finding new ways to play with others’ expectations.
Shyamalan is one of the bravest filmmakers in Hollywood. Because with this type of film there are only two possibilities: either it works or it doesn’t work. Then the 52-year-old will either be celebrated as a genius or receive another swan song to his career. With the film of the same name of the novel “Knock at the Cabin”, published in this country as “The House at the End of the World”, Shyamalan wants to know it again.
For the work, he gathered a number of well-known actors, including Marvel star Dave Bautista. This is interesting in that Shyamalan’s characters often contain a very nuanced game, there is a lot of sensitivity behind it. That someone like the former wrestler is capable of doing this is often doubted. But Shyamalan has given Bautista the opportunity to take on a new challenge. And he wasn’t disappointed in how he faced it ComicBook.com let know:
“[Dave] Bautista is – well, I was at dinner with some friends; and they said, ‘How’s Dave Bautista? The wrestler, right? That’s crazy! How was it?’ And I said, ‘He did one of the best performances of the year in this film.’ And they were like, ‘Hahaha!’ And I said, ‘Nah… that’s not a joke, I’m telling you the truth. This guy brought it.’ The right guy, the right role, the right moment in his life. He did exactly what any actor should do: he showed himself to be completely vulnerable, put himself completely in my hands and said, ‘I trust you.’ And that’s why I felt the need to emphasize the beauty of his human nature. That was a beautiful moment.”

“Knock at the Cabin” is meant to be similar to “Signs”.
Knock at the Cabin follows a couple, Andrew (Jonathan Groff) and Eric (Ben Aldrige), who want to spend a fun weekend in a cabin in the woods with their daughter Wen (Kristen Cui). But before they know it, they are taken hostage by a group of strangers. It turns out that the group, which includes Redmond (Rupert Grint), Adriane (Nikki Amuka-Bird) and Sabrina (Abby Quinn), led by the awe-inspiring Leonard (Dave Bautista), is adamant that the apocalypse is at hand. And only the small family shall be able to save humanity – at a price.
For Shyamalan, his next film bears striking parallels to his 2002 thriller Signs. If only because both works would take place in a confined space (via games radar):
“Because both films are limited in a way and both are populated by such lovely families who find themselves at the center of apocalyptic events. I believe that one falls in love with both families. You laugh with them, you fear for them. You feel connected to them.”
“Knock at the Cabin” starts in Germany on February 16, 2023 in the cinemas.
