A forest fire broke out on Sunday morning around 11 a.m. on the slopes of Mount Gazzirola above Tesserete in the Lugano region. A total of 25 firefighters from the Lugano and Tesserete Corps and two helicopters intervened on the spot.
“The situation was under control at the start of the afternoon,” said the Lugano fire brigade commander. “The disaster, the causes of which have not yet been established, affected six hectares of forest, fortunately in an area without dwellings”, specified the commander.
Prohibition on lighting fires
This fire is the second in a week after the one that hit the slopes of Monte Generoso on March 3 and 4. The persistent drought south of the Alps, the wind and the high temperatures could be the cause of the damage. The absolute ban on lighting open fires has been in force for a few weeks in Ticino and in the Italian-speaking valleys of Graubünden.
