New Delhi
Shane Warne feels that the current Indian batting line-up is not even close to the one he often played against. Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Saurabh Ganguly and VVS Laxman were included in that batting order.

The team captained by Virat Kohli is called by many experts as the best Indian team of all time. However, this team has largely depended on its bowling attack to win Test matches regularly. The team’s batting has been a matter of great concern. From the year 2020 till now, the batting average of the Indian team has been 25.4. Talking about the big teams, only West Indies is behind India.

90s Indian Batsmen

batsman Test Run Top Average strike rate 100s 50s
Sachin Tendulkar 200 15921 248* 53.79 54.1 51 68
Rahul Dravid 164 13228 270 52.31 42.5 36 63
VVS Laxman 134 8781 281 45.97 49.4 17 56
Virender Sehwag 104 8456 319 49.34 82.2 23 32
Saurabh Ganguly 113 7212 239 42.17 51.3 16 35

Warne said in a conversation on Sky Sports, ‘Nowhere is their batting as strong as Dravid, Ganguly, Laxman, Tendulkar, Sehwag. Virat Kohli, if not the best batsman in the world, is definitely one of the best batsmen in all formats. But when you see Sehwag, Ganguly, Dravid, Laxman, Tendulkar in the top 5, it was a different thing. So you can’t say that Kohli’s team is the best Indian batting team.

batsman Test Run Top Average strike rate 100s 50s
Virat Kohli 96 7765 254* 51.08 56.5 27 27
Cheteshwar Pujara 90 6494 206* 45.41 44.3 18 31
Ajinkya Rahane 78 4756 188 39.63 49.2 12 24
Rohit Sharma 43 3047 212 46.87 55.5 8 14
KL Rahul 40 2321 199 35.16 54.1 6 12

Talking about the Indian batting order of that era of 90 and 2000, these players, called Fab 5, gave India many historic victories on the strength of their bat. Although at that time the Indian pace bowling attack was not so strong. But the batting order was awesome. Sehwag had a blast in this batting. Dravid had a halt. It was Sachin’s class. There was magic on Lakshman’s wrist. And then there was Sourav Ganguly’s drive. Overall, an entire generation grew up and inspired by this batting order.

Talking about the statistics, these five together scored 53788 runs in 715 Test matches. The average was another 49.07. There were centuries, 143 and 254 half-centuries were also made.

pant next super star
Warne said the big reason for India’s victories overseas is its stellar pace attack, though he also lauded the batting contributions of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant. In his view, these three are the best batsmen in Test cricket for India at the moment. He described Indian wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant as the future superstar of the Indian batting attack.

Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant, however, did not perform very well in the series against England. Rohit Sharma definitely played some useful innings. India are currently leading 2-1 in the series and the Manchester Test match has been canceled for the time being. Earlier this year, Pant’s scintillating batting helped India win the historic Test series 2-1 in Australia.

Warne said, “Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are two different players and I think Rishabh Pant is on his way to becoming a superstar. But I think it is their fast bowlers who have made the Indian team capable of winning not only India but in any situation.
