Encanto: a visually stunning and musically catchy Disney

REVIEW / FILM REVIEW – Byron Howard and Jared Bush, directors of “Zootopia” are back with their new production: “Encanto, the Fantastic Madrigal Family”. Release scheduled for November 24 in cinemas.

Charm : when Disney attacks Colombian culture

For its 60th animated film, Disney Studios decided to focus on Colombian culture. After Coco, Vaiana and Luca, which explored new cultures and new customs, the big-eared firm continues to embrace diversity with Charm. In a mysterious place tucked away in Colombia, each member of the Madrigal family possesses a unique power. Everyone except Mirabel, who must compensate for his lack of power with his unfailing generosity, benevolence and motivation.

Charm is a generous offer from Disney. Colorful and catchy musical, the studio has gone all out in its new production. Whether in animation or sound, everything borders on perfection, both the visual language is modern and impressive. Charm is a very colorful work that will delight the wonder of the youngest. Via very endearing characters, the feature film provides a gentle and sensitive look at Colombian culture. Charm is a beautiful representation of Latin America and makes it possible to offer the youngest a great openness to a significant ethnic diversity. It must be said that the production turned to Colombian experts, such as Juan Rendon and Natalie Osma, documentary filmmakers on Colombia, for maximum authenticity. Charm, it means enchantment or charm in Spanish, and it’s a name that suits it!

Very successful songs

As for Vaiana, Charm opts for a musical approach. The feature film is generally structured in the same way, around the quest for a young girl, interspersed with more or less successful songs. But musically, Charm put the turbo. Overall, the songs are all very catchy. Lin-Manuel Miranda gave his all to find new melodies, far superior to those of Vaiana, that he had already worked on. Special mention to the song about Luisa, Surface Pressure, who offers modern and convincing little rap and R&B tones.

With Charm, Disney tries to copy the Pixar method. The studio abandons its comic springs a little to play the emotional card. Like with Ron unlocks, the studio with big ears is inspired by the remarkable work of their Pixar cronies, without managing to match them. And even if it is sometimes a little sluggish, overall the emotion works.
