Eight billion: the numbers are overwhelming, there are more and more foreigners in the world! And, sorry for the populist parties, it’s not going to stop. In 2050, there will be 2.5 billion inhabitants on the African continent, against only 405 million in Europe. In Switzerland, almost 800 migrants a week already come to the border with Austria for asylum. To the point that the federal and cantonal authorities are on the verge of a nervous breakdown. “The biggest asylum crisis since the Second World War”, according to State Secretary Christine Schraner Burgener. The Confederation’s accommodation structures are saturated and have practically no more free beds, according to the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM), which calls on the accommodation capacities of the cantons. In addition to the 60,000 Ukrainian refugees with protection status S, the SEM expects the number of applicants to climb to almost 24,000 by the end of the year. Many of these migrants only cross Switzerland to reach Germany illegally, causing new friction with our big neighbour.
