A big premiere absolute tonight on Sky Cinema Uno at 9:15 pm – and streaming on NOW: è Dune, the blockbuster film by Oscar-nominated director Denis Villeneuve, written by Villeneuve himself with Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth, starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac and Jason Momoa.
Presented out of competition, as a world premiere, at the 78th Venice International Film Festival, Dune is an adaptation of the science fiction saga created by Frank Herbert and illustrates one of the fundamental chapters of the entire series: the rise to power of the young Paul Atreides. Let’s find out from the plot which is set in a remote future, when humanity has now colonized space and numerous planets united in a feudal-type system of government, headed by a single emperor who rules together with a council which includes the leaders of each Home.
Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac) enjoys an excellent reputation, being loved by his people. He has created a noteworthy corps of military fighters, capable of rivaling the imperial armies, despite being outnumbered. The emperor fears the figure of the Duke but cannot attack him directly, so he decides to foment an already existing feud between House Atreides and House Harkonnen, led by Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård).
To implement the plan, the emperor entrusts the Atreides with control of the desert planet Arrakis, called Dune, which is the most important planet in the whole empire, since the only place where Melange, the raw material, is produced which extends life, also capable of empowering the human mind and giving the ability to travel in space.
The Melange is therefore the fundamental element on which the whole economy and communications of the empire are based. The Duke does not suspect that this concession is actually part of the emperor’s diabolical plan.
In addition to the Royal Houses, there are other factions that play with the fate of the empire, and one in particular: that of the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood, a caste of women with extraordinary abilities who for centuries have been guiding the genetic lines of the various houses to obtain the ‘supreme being, the Kwisatz Haderach, one who will be able to master vast powers, superior to those of a Reverend Mother Bene Gesserit.
Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), Duke Leto’s concubine, is a Bene Gesserit and received orders from her superiors to give birth only to daughters but, out of love, she also gave the Duke a son, Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet).
When the Atreides move to Arrakis to carry out the emperor’s orders and thus take control of the production of the spice, they discover that they have been betrayed. The young Paul thus finds himself facing a series of unexpected physical and mental battles, but finds allies in the Fremen, the population that lives on Arrakis …
In the cast, in addition to the already nominated, also Oscar nominee Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Chen Chang, David Dastmalchian, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Oscar nominee Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa and Javier Bardem.
