The person in distress for whom the local police had been called on Sunday afternoon at the De Plas estate in Houthalen-Helchteren died. He is a 19 year old young man from Molenbeek.
The emergency services were called on Sunday around 2.30 p.m. for a person drowning at the De Plas recreation area in Houthalen-Helchteren (Limburg).
All bathers had to leave the bathing area and the beach was evacuated in order to search for the missing person. She was eventually able to be pulled out of the water, but died on the spot.
The prosecution and the scientific police descended on the scene.
“The boy’s parents are at the scene. We wish them a lot of courage,” the mayor of Houthalen told Het Laatste Nieuws.
The bathing ban is still in effect and will probably remain so until tomorrow out of “respect for the family”.
