Disenchanted is definitely one of the most anticipated Disney+ releases in 2022. The feature debuts 15 years after the original film, Enchanted, which hit theaters in 2007. The continuation has Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey and other stars in a true inversion of the first movie.
“Nothing stays enchanted forever… Years after their ‘happily ever after,’ Gisele, Robert and Morgan move to a new community – and Andalasia and the real world are thrown out of balance,” states the official synopsis for Disenchanted.
In addition to Amy Adams (The Woman in the Window) and Patrick Dempsey (Grey’s Anatomy), the cast of Disenchanted includes James Marsden (Westworld), Idina Menzel (Frozen) and Maya Rudolph (Missão Madrinha de Casamento).
In a recent interview, the director of Disenchanted revealed that the new film is a complete inversion of the first – see below why.
Disenchanted is the opposite of Enchanted at Disney
Disenchanted lands on Disney+, directed by Adam Shankman. The filmmaker is known for films such as Hairspray, A Walk to Remember and Babysitter Operation.
The trailer for the feature reveals that the protagonist Giselle, played by Amy Adams, will undergo a villainous transformation.
Other characters, such as Idina Menzel’s Nancy, will also gain more prominence – and even their own songs.
In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, director Adam Shankman revealed that the new film has a very different focus than the original. Disenchanted is much more of a fairy tale than a romantic comedy.
“It’s a story about family. The first film is essentially a romantic comedy, in which Giselle is a fish out of water. In Disenchanted, she appears quite differently. In fact, we had to turn the other characters into fish out of water”, commented the filmmaker.
For the filmmaker, the traditional climate of romantic comedies does not make much sense for the plot of Disenchanted.
“Unless you wanted to see Giselle having relationship issues with Robert, which we don’t want to show, that romantic comedy style doesn’t make a lot of sense. Disenchanted is about creating a new energy that feels like Enchanted, but with very different rules,” explained Shankman.
With that, fans wonder: will Disenchanted win a sequel? Given the outcome of the feature, and the success of the film on Disney +, this is definitely a possibility for the future.
One of the great assets of Disenchanted is its cast. In addition to Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, Idina Menzel and Maya Rudolph, the film also features actors such as Jayma Mays (Glee), Yvette Nicole Brown (Community), Oscar Nunez (The Office) and Ann Harada (Schmigadoon).
