De Ligt: ‘How do I look at Ajax? Like any fan: I trust they will spin’

Matthijs de Ligt is confident that Ajax will still have a successful season. The former player of the Amsterdam club, who currently plays for Bayern Munich, tells this to The Telegraph.

Ajax can look back on a disappointing first half of the season. In the league, the team is currently second, while in the Champions League it has lost no fewer than four times. Still, De Ligt is positive about the future. He explains how he looks at the current Ajax. ‘Like any fan. I’m confident they’ll turn it around. The season is still long, so that will be fine.’

De Ligt himself made his first minutes last weekend after a minor knee injury. The defender is therefore fit just in time for the World Cup. ‘I feel fit after being out for a week. I played for thirty minutes. I am fit and fresh. Of course I’m looking forward to the World Cup. It’s a childhood dream come true. That dream is now going to become reality.’

De Ligt has its own Cruyff Court in Abcoude

De Ligt already dreamed of playing at a World Cup as a child on the football square. In his former hometown of Abcoude, De Ligt had a Cruyff Court built. “I used to play on these kind of fields often. If you then have your own Cruyff Court, that’s fantastic. It’s the field where I used to play soccer. Memories do come up and also nostalgia. No matter how beautiful my life is now, that time was the best. That you could play football with your friends without any worries’, says De Ligt, who adds that it is important for today’s youth to keep moving in order to stay healthy.
