In the past transfer period it was unclear whether Frenkie de Jong would also be active for FC Barcelona this season. Due to the financial situation of the club, the Catalans seemed eager to sell the midfielder, but in the end the Dutch international remained. He is only satisfied with that, De Jong says in conversation with The Telegraph.
“It has been a special construction when I extended my contract in the COVID period. So then you postpone money and get it back later. But that has been arranged’, says the former Ajax player about the payment of his salary.
He is also slow to speak about the sporting achievements of the club. ‘I think the club is now on the rise again, has started to rise. In the Champions League it was of course very bad and everyone is disappointed about that, but things are going well in the competition. There are young players with potential and the team is a lot better.’
The stronghold of the Dutch national team also indicates that he was not concerned about the number of minutes he would make with the Spanish superpower. “I wanted to show that I am better than the others and worth being in the starting line-up. Because of the situation I was in, I knew that at the beginning of the season I would play a little less than I did before. But I still regularly made minutes, came in and played a game now and then.’
Finally, De Jong does say that he was disturbed at some point. ‘At one point a newspaper published things from my contract. I didn’t leak it and there was only one other party who also had the contract. So that had to come from the club. Then you think: this is not necessary. And suddenly there was a letter asking whether my contract was valid, because the previous chairman Bartomeu was no longer allowed to conclude it. I found it irritating that the club did it, but I had no influence on it.’
