David Sassoli is dead. The head of the European Parliament died early Tuesday morning in a hospital in Italy. He was only 65 years old.

The President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, died unexpectedly at the age of 65. His spokesman Roberto Cuillo confirmed this via Twitter. The Italian politician died in a clinic on Tuesday morning in the municipality of Aviano in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. The date and place of the funeral will be announced soon, it is said.

A few hours earlier, a spokesman for Parliament announced in Brussels that Sassoli had to be treated in hospital because of a “serious complication due to a dysfunction of the immune system”. The politician of the social democratic party Partito Democratico had already been in treatment since December 26th and canceled all of his appointments.

Before his political career, David Sassoli was a journalist

He suffered from pneumonia last autumn and had to be treated in a clinic. Born in Florence, Sassoli made a name for himself in Italy as a news anchor and journalist even before his political career. He was married with two children. The politician was considered a noble fan of the Serie A team AC Florence and was known as a progressive Catholic who had been involved in church organizations since his youth.
