While the whole football world was looking forward to the opening match at the World Cup in Qatar, Austria and Italy played a friendly match against each other. Both countries failed to qualify and must therefore follow the World Cup from their seats. They were eliminated in the first play-off round after the group stage. Italy surprisingly did not get past North Macedonia, Austria lost to Wales.

Austria took a dream start in the Ernst Happel stadium. After barely six minutes, Xaver Schlager had opened the score with a striking blast past Donnarumma. Ten minutes before the break, the Italian goalie had to turn around for a second time after a free kick from Austrian captain David Alaba.

Striking: it is the first time since 1960 that Italy lost an international match against Austria.
