There was an earthquake in the tennis world as soon as Daniil Medvedev defeated Novak Djokovic, considered a favorite in the US Open final. Russia’s Medvedev is all around as soon as he beat the world number one tennis player. Now one of his victory speeches is also becoming fiercely viral, in which he is seen winning the hearts of the whole world including his wife with his witty and cool style.
Medvedev, 25, confidently admitted that he had not received any gifts for his wife on the third wedding anniversary. Actually, on the day of the final, it was Medvedev’s third marriage anniversary. “I forgot to buy a gift during the tournament, so when I made it to the semi-finals, I started thinking that if I lose, I have to buy a gift as soon as possible,” he said amidst a stadium full of mics.
With this defeat, Djokovic’s dream of completing a calendar slam remained unfulfilled. Djokovic won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon titles this season, and if he had won the US Open, he would have become the first tennis player since Rod Laver in 1969 to complete a calendar slam. However, Medvedev did not let Djokovic’s dream come true and won the title by defeating in the final.
With this victory, Medvedev has become the third Russian tennis player after Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Marat Safin to have the feat of winning a Grand Slam. Djokovic is equal to Switzerland’s Roger Federer and Spain’s Rafael Nadal at 20 Grand Slams. He had a chance to win the US Open for a record 21st Grand Slam, which he lost with this defeat.
