Creators of ‘1899’ pronounce after accusation of PLAGIAREM Brazilian comic strip

A few days ago, the Netflix launched in its catalog the new series from the creators of ‘dark🇧🇷 Dinner Frize and Baran bo Odar.

Entitled ‘1899‘, the production became one of the most talked about subjects of the moment, not only because of its confusing plot, but also because it was being accused of plagiarism by the Brazilian illustrator and comic artist. Mary Cagnin🇧🇷

This is because the thriller series bears many similarities with the material by the Brazilian author and seems to have been adapted even visually, with comparative images.

Cagnin exposed in his social networks that several elements of the series were plagiarized from his HQ ‘Black Silence‘, published in 2016.

Upon learning of the controversy, Frize defended himself through a post on Instagram and attacked Cagninsaying his statement is a ploy to try to sell more comics:

Take the time to watch:

“Oh. Internet! I haven’t posted anything in years because honestly I think social media has become toxic. The last 24 hours have proven it again. To put this in context: a Brazilian artist claimed that we stole graphic novel ideas from her. To be clear: we didn’t do that! Until yesterday we didn’t even know about the existence of this graphic novel. Over the course of two years, we put pain, sweat and exhaustion into the creation of ‘1899’. This is an original idea and is not based on any material. However, we are being bombarded with messages – some of them rude and offensive. Someone raises a false alarm and everyone falls for it, without even checking if the statements make any sense. Of course this must be a scheme to sell more of their comics: nice move.”

Odar also spoke out and shared a note from Netflix, which reads as follows:

“I wanted to remain silent, but it was too much to see creators receive hurtful messages that basically insult them. They are two incredibly talented people and have worked hard to come up with an original story. I get extremely sad and irritated when the mass follows an idea without knowing what they are talking about. ‘1899’ is a special project they’ve been working on for years and has nothing to do with the graphic novel. If you’ve watched the show and read the comics, you would know and we wouldn’t need to have this conversation. I will always defend them because I know what they created is something unique.”

In the post’s caption, he wrote:

“Thank you @1899netflix for those kind words. They mean a lot to us. As I mentioned in my previous post: Unfortunately we don’t know the artist, nor her work or comic. We would never steal from other artists as we know what an artist is. We’ve also reached out to her, so hopefully she’ll drop these allegations. the internet has become a strange place. please more love instead of hate.”

In your defense, Cagnin posted images that compare his work to the look of the series, which look identical.

“I’M IN SHOCK. The day I found out that the 1899 series is just IDENTICAL to my comic Black Silence, published in 2016,” she says.

“I’m in shock. I found that the 1899 series is simply identical to my comic Black Silence, published in 2016. It’s all there: The Black Pyramid. The deaths inside the ship/ship. The multinational crew. The apparently strange and unexplained things. The eye symbols and when they appear. Codes written. The voices calling to them. Subtle plot details, such as the personal dramas of the characters, including the mysterious deaths.”

“I had the opportunity that many comic artists never had: to be able to show my work to an international audience. People. I gave lectures. Talked about the plot. I presented it to influential people in the area. The business is serious. Obviously, Black Silence is a short work, almost a short story. It is very easy, in 12 hours of projection of the series, to dilute all these “references”, but the essence of what I created is there.”, HE SAID.

Cagnin even left her comic so that people could see and compare the material created by her with the series:

“Guys, please, anyone who has watched the series and read my comic and can help me with the collection of similarities, it would help me a lot. Later, I will ask for your help so that this matter reaches the media. We cannot think that just because we are Brazilians we should accept this kind of disdain and indifference. We have countless cases of gringos copying us, in movies, series and songs. As in the case of the movie “The Adventures of Pi” which was copied from a Brazilian book.”, he said.

Netflix did not comment on the matter, which should gain greater repercussions in the coming days.

The story of the series revolves around the mysterious circumstances of the journey of an immigrant ship from Europe to New York. The passengers, all with different backgrounds and nationalities, are united by the hopes and dreams of a new century and a future in another country. When they discover a second ship wandering the open sea that had disappeared months ago, their journey takes an unexpected turn. What they find on board will turn passage to the promised land into a deadly nightmare, connecting each of them in a web of secrets.
