The Chamber approved Thursday in plenary session the bill of the Minister of Justice, Vincent Van Quickenborne, aiming “to make justice more humane, faster and firmer”.

Among the provisions is the postponement of the entry into force of the law on external legal status (LSJE), due to the rise in contamination. The new date set for this is June 1, 2022.

The federal government wishes to implement this law which provides that prison sentences of up to three years will no longer be carried out by the penitentiary system but by a decision of the judge responsible for the execution of sentences.

Due to the impact of the Covid pandemic on Belgian prisons, it was decided last spring to postpone this implementation to December 1, 2021, assuming that the coronavirus would have been sufficiently contained by then.

However, now that contaminations are on the rise again and the pandemic law is being implemented, the government is forced to postpone the entry into force of the YCJA until June 1, 2022.
