Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein
Juan Carlos’ wife Sofia is said to have confronted her
In an explosive podcast, Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein tells her story, leaving out no piquant detail about her years of affair with Spain’s ex-king Juan Carlos. Now she reveals that his wife once even confronted her.
“Corinna and The King” is the name of the podcast that is currently likely to upset the Spanish royal family. In it, Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein, 58, speaks of her five-year laison with the now-disgraced and exiled Juan Carlos of Spain, 84, which began in 2004 and played a key role in his 2014 abdication.
Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein felt the wrath of Queen Sofia
In the latest episode of the eight-episode podcast, which was released on Monday, November 14, 2022, she claims that Queen Sofia, 84, once asked her about her affair with him at Zarzuela Palace in the presence of Juan Carlos.
Juan Carlos had invited Corinna to visit the palace under the pretense of a little tour with a good friend, a famous conductor. Corinna urgently wanted to avoid meeting the queen and repeatedly checked with Juan Carlos that it couldn’t come to that. “I heard how hostile Queen Sofia can be and how obsessed she was with this relationship, so I was quite concerned about actually entering the palace if I wasn’t 100 percent sure,” explains the now 58-year-old, but also Out of respect, she didn’t want to cause a scene.
Queen Sofia: “I know who you are”
But of course it turned out differently than she had hoped. “Suddenly, Queen Sofia stormed into the room with a face like a thunderbolt,” Corinna recalls. “She pointed at me and said, ‘I know who you are.’ Of course I wanted to sink into the ground.” Apparently Juan Carlos was no longer in control of the situation himself. “The king seemed completely taken aback and couldn’t really deal with this aggression that was happening in front of other people. So it was quite awkward and it was quite an embarrassing scene.”
Juan Carlos proposed to Corinna
However, the liaison between Corinna and Juan Carlos did not end there. In 2009, the then king surprised his sweetheart with a romantic candlelight dinner and pulled a sparkling ring out of his pocket. “It’s an emerald-cut diamond with two triangular diamonds on the side. A very classic engagement ring design,” says the Frankfurt am Main-born entrepreneur.
It wasn’t really a surprise that Juan Carlos wanted to marry her. “That ‘I wish I could marry you’ conversation probably started in 2005. He kept telling me, ‘I’d love to marry you tomorrow!’ So it wasn’t a big surprise, it came at a time when our relationship had become very serious.” But: “In his case, of course, he was still married, so I always saw that as a sign of how much I meant to him, so it was more symbolic than I would call it binding.”
