‘Cillessen had a lesser moment, Pasveer had a very lesser month with Ajax’

Henk Timmer has slight doubts about Louis van Gaal’s choice to call up Remko Pasveer and not Jasper Cillessen. The Ajax player has traveled to Qatar with number 1 on his shirt World Cup to play, but the reason why he was chosen over Cillessen sees the former goalkeeper as debatable.

‘Yes, Cillessen had a lesser moment at Sparta-out. But Pasveer had a very bad month with Ajax’, he says in an interview with The Telegraph. ‘The strange thing is that the passed Orange goalkeepers all say so little about it. It seems like they are not allowed to talk about it. I really said: “I don’t give a shit, I didn’t get selected anyway. This is the reason and this is what I was told and I don’t agree”.’

Pasveer, Justin Bijlow and Andries Noppert have to fight out who will be under the bar during the World Cup. Timmer cannot lose sight of the numbers handed out. ‘In principle, Pasveer now has an advantage. He has been given jersey number 1. And check it out, Edwin van der Sar and Maarten Stekelenburg also wore that number during World Cups.’ Would he also go for Pasveer? ‘I would choose Bijlow. That boy is athletic, has a good kick and is in shape at the right time.’

‘It really goes between Pasveer and Bijlow’

Joop Hiele, former goalkeeper of Feyenoord, is less blind to the back numbers that the keepers received. ‘Those back numbers don’t always say everything, because I also regularly see basic players with number 99 or 25 in the field. It’s not like it used to be, that 1 to 11 is in the field. The only thing I don’t assume is that Noppert will become first keeper. It’s really between Pasveer and Bijlow.’

‘I was asked a while ago whether I thought it was right that Bijlow was passed over for the Dutch team at the time. At that time I thought he was a little less. Not that he was bad, just a little less. I have always said that he has the most potential in the Netherlands. I stand by that. I think that if he continues to reach his high level, he will simply be number 1’, he concludes.
