BT’s royal correspondent: Herlufsholm is now the Crown Prince Couple’s biggest crisis

It is often said that there are very few crises in the Danish royal family compared to other countries. But this week, this illusion burst.

The shocking revelations about the royal children’s school have now become the crown prince couple’s biggest crisis, and they must act resolutely and pull Prince Christian out of school. It can not be otherwise.

The TV 2 documentary ‘Herlufsholm’s secrets’ reveals new shocking conditions such as assault, violence and bullying at the elite school in Næstved, where Prince Christian is a student, and where Princess Isabella has to go after the summer holidays.

The case exploded on Thursday, when the Crown Prince and Crown Princess made a statement: They find the conditions unacceptable. But instead of pulling Prince Christian out immediately, ‘you follow developments’.

It has gradually become the Royal House’s airy favorite turn, but is simply not good enough.

There are two reasons for this:

The first is obvious. Of course, our future king must not move in such a toxic environment as that described on Herlufsholm.

We Danes are a very unpretentious people who live in the illusion that Prince Christian is just a 15-year-old boy. Crown Prince Frederik’s often unpretentious way maintains this image that the Crown Prince’s family is also just an ordinary family eating Solgryn for breakfast and cycling to school.

They are not.

Prince Christian will one day be our head of state, and it is, as you know, the teenage years that shape us as human beings. Herlufsholm Boarding School will create the foundation for our king. Of course, it does not work at all, not at all, in the light of the violent stories of abuse, violence and bullying.

The other obvious reason is that Crown Princess Mary has for years focused on the well-being of children, and the Mary Foundation aims to combat bullying.

It makes no sense to say that you fight against bullying and for the well-being of children when you send your children to Herlufsholm.

On Mary Fondens website, you can see a large picture of Crown Princess Mary, which states that the foundation ‘works for a society where everyone experiences belonging’.

Today, those words sound hollow.

The Mary Foundation’s work is decidedly opposed at Herlufsholm Boarding School, where rich parents’ children have for years been allowed to offend each other in a toxic environment that is now revealed by 50 students, where only two of them dare to appear in TV 2’s documentary.

In fact, it has been known for years that conditions at Herlufsholm were not normal. Already in 2004 told Kasper Hansen in Dagbladet Information about his terrible experiences at school. The visual artist Kristian von Hornsleth already told in 2015 that there was’ mental torture ‘at school’.

I can not understand at all that the Crown Prince and Crown Princess have sent the children to Herlufsholm knowing that the school was in a scandal. And now it’s the whole culture that is being described as ‘sadistic’ in the new documentary.

I hardly dare think about what it is like for some children coming out of the sick environment. In the worst case, they become icy, blunt individuals who carry on Herlufsholm’s sick values in the rest of Danish society.

It is not normal for children to behave this way. This is not how life is at most ordinary schools in Denmark, and that is probably also why the Danes react so violently to the revelations about Herlufsholm.

82 percent of BT’s readers say in a poll (58,000 have voted) that the Crown Prince and Crown Princess should pull the children out of school, and this is how Danes actually do not react normally when less bad stories hit Amalienborg. The Royal House’s social media is also overflowing with calls that children should change schools.

It is apparently an overwhelming wish among the Danes that the royal children should not move to Herlufsholm. In fact, no children should move in that culture. Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary should listen to the Danes and pull their children out of the sick environment.

They deserve a better future. And we have actually also deserved a king who grew up with healthy, Danish values such as respect, equality and empathy.
