Bitter Marvel goodbyes threaten: “Guardians of the Galaxy 3” is the end for the current MCU team

In a post, James Gunn bid farewell to the MCU and its Guardians of the Galaxy crew. He emphasized that it will be a real farewell.

Guardians of the Galaxy was a milestone for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in 2014. Because the film impressively demonstrated that cinema audiences are willing to watch a film whose characters they hardly know and whose stars at the time could hardly be assigned to Hollywood’s A league. Heroes from the second row, so to speak – through and through. But the film also proved that risky material, in the right hands and in the right hands, can generate excitement and tinkle the tills.

The success of “Guardians of the Galaxy” can definitely be attributed to James Gunn. Before the huge mammoth project, the 55-year-old had only directed smaller films, including the great superhero comedy “Super – Shut Up, Crime!”. The fact that those responsible around Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige entrusted him with the film must also have been due to the fact that hardly anyone wanted to venture to an almost unknown troupe. Gunn, that’s for sure, is responsible for the continued development of the MCU and for the studio’s trust in young and creative filmmakers like Jon Watts (“Spider-Man: No Way Home”) and Taika Waititi (“Thor: Love and Thunder “).

Now Gunn’s time in the MCU, and likely with it the Guardians as audiences know and love them, is coming to an end. The shooting of the third adventure of Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) and his crew are over, only post-production is left. The filmmaker took this as an opportunity to say goodbye to his Marvel baby in an emotional post on social media:

“After over 100 days of shooting and more than 3,000 exposures, this is the slate for the final shot of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ presented to me by the camera crew. It was a simple shot of Rocket sitting down, first with Sean Gunn, then without. And it cost me everything not to collapse on the spot, sobbing. I’ve spent most of the last ten years of my life working on and thinking about The Guardians. While I still have a long way to go in visual effects and editing, it was still a significant event for me.”

It’s a lot easier for him to explain how much he cares about the crew and cast, but it’s harder to explain how much he cares about the characters, Gunn said. They are a part of him, and putting them on screen and putting the words in their mouths is a way of expressing his love for them. The reunion with the crazy troupe will be a long time coming. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” will only start on May 3, 2023 in German cinemas. James Gunn confirms it’s the end of the Guardians’ journey

Dave Bautista hinted early on that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would be the end for his character Drax. The reason given by the ex-wrestler was that, at 53, it was becoming increasingly difficult for him to keep fit for a film. Especially as Drax, Bautista was shirtless throughout.

Just recently, Karen Gillan also hinted in an Instagram post that Nebula’s journey could be over. Gunn took the guesswork out of the game by responding to a fan’s question with a somber statement:

“I have the three [Filme]that I made, staged on my own terms. This is the end of this story and this team.”

So is it the end of the team in its current composition? Or is it the actual end of the Guardians? So will fans be confronted with more than just a potential death? Many a fan will certainly not even want to hear the answer. But rest assured, there is still the opportunity to go on adventures with them in at least three films: in “Thor: Love and Thunder” (German theatrical release on July 6, 2022), in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (exclusive to Disney+ from December 2022) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
