Taylor Sheridan would have been so impressed with the series’ script about the legendary black lawman Bass Reeves, with David Oyelowo in the lead role that he decided to direct the pilot.
The Yellowstone co-creator and showrunner Taylor Sheridan will direct the pilot of Bass Reevesthe six-part limited series with David Oyelowo as the legendary lawman of the Wild West.
Taylor Sheridan carved out a space for himself in his busy schedule after reading the pilot’s script and being so impressed that he decided to call David Oyelowo. “The reality is that Taylor is one of the best directors on the planet”Oyelowo told Deadline.
With Sheridan directing the opening two episodes, Oyelowo said: “We have to populate the show with a bunch of people of color to make sure the next Taylors are black in the future and there are plenty of them, so that we don’t run out of high-level black directors.”.
Bass Reeves, a legendary black lawman, was an American officer and gunslinger, the first black sheriff west of the Mississippi River. As deputy sheriff, Reeves allegedly arrested thousands and killed 14 outlaws who challenged him. Transgressions ranged from stealing horses to arresting even his own son for the murder of his wife. Reeves is said to have been the inspiration for the Lone Ranger character. He patrolled the Wild West around the time it was set in 1883.
