It’s been a month sinceAvatar: The Way of Water‘ has hit theaters, but there’s still plenty of behind-the-scenes news coming out.
In an interview for Entertainment Weekly, the co-writer Rick Jaffa revealed that one of the sequel’s original plans was for the Na’vi people to fight their enemies in space, but the idea ended up being scrapped entirely.
“There was an idea of a space battle. This idea gained a lot of traction in early drafts and we talked about it a lot. However, we started to realize that it might not come naturally… How would that work with the story we’re telling? Jim said, ‘Well, give me a few weeks.’ He went out and wrote an entire script. And, by the way, a brilliant script… But ultimately the whole script was thrown out because it just didn’t work with the story we were planning.”
Jaffa did not give more details on how the battle would go, but considering that the sequel is called ‘The Way of the Water‘, it wouldn’t make sense to take the plot conflicts into space.
Worldwide, the film surpassed $1.9 billion at the worldwide box office, and is poised to surpass ‘Spider-Man – No Going Home‘ ($1.91 billion) as the 6th highest-grossing film in film history.
