Leonardo DiCaprio almost didn’t appear in Titanic, as James Cameron said in an interview.
With “Avatar – Departing Pandora” has JamesCameron shot the highest-grossing film of all time. On December 14, 2022, the sequel “Avatar: The Way of Water” will start in cinemas, which has to be the fourth or fifth most successful film to recoup the high production costs alone. It’s not unlikely that Cameron can do that. After all, he has a good quota when it comes to extremely successful films.
his drama “Titanic” from 1997 is still number 3 on the list. The film almost had to do without its biggest star, because Leonardo DiCaprio (Jack) almost didn’t get the role, as James Cameron said in an interview with GQ (via Variety) now revealed:
“There was a meeting with Leo and then there was a test recording with Leo. The meeting was fun because I was sitting in my conference room waiting to meet an actor. And I look around and all the women from the whole office are in the meeting. They all wanted to meet Leo. It was hilarious.”
Kate Winslet was already set to play Rose before the test shots with DiCaprio were scheduled:
“He came back a few days later and the camera was ready to take the video. He didn’t know there was supposed to be a rehearsal. He thought it would be another meeting to get to know Kate. So I was like, ‘Okay, we’re just going to go into the next room and run through a few lines and I’ll record it.’ He mean: ‘You mean a rehearsal?’ I said yes.’ He said, ‘Oh, I don’t do that.’ I shook his hand and was like, ‘Thanks for coming over.’”

James Cameron was ready to give up Leonardo DiCaprio
James Cameron wanted to turn down DiCaprio at this point. But the actor asked again: “Wait, wait, wait. If I don’t read a sample, will I not get the role? Just like that?” To which Cameron replied:
“Come on. This is a huge film that’s going to eat up two years of my life and you’ll be doing five other things while I’m still in post-production. So I’m not going to screw it up by making the wrong casting decision. So you’re going to read the audition or you won’t get the role.”
DiCaprio then did the test shoots with Kate Winslet and immediately convinced Cameron that he was the right actor to play Jake. The rest is history. If you feel like watching the film again, you can easily rent it from Amazon Prime:
